Mississippi’s $400 Million Government Waste Exposed

While the federal government’s bloated spending receives most of the headlines, state-level waste often flies under the radar. That’s changing in Mississippi, where State Auditor Shad White has compiled a comprehensive 800-page report detailing approximately $400 million in government waste and inefficiencies. The report, which White has been developing over the past couple of years, reveals a disturbing pattern of frivolous spending on everything from overpriced technology to ideologically-driven programs that have nothing to do with efficient governance.

“In total, about $400 million of waste,” said Auditor Shad White. “State agencies buying TV screens for $5,800 a pop, all the way to the millions of dollars we spend on DEI initiatives at our universities.”

From Woke Training to Wasteful Spending

Some of the most egregious examples of waste highlighted in White’s report include microaggression training for engineers and “social justice yoga” classes for preschool children. If you’re wondering what “social justice yoga” for toddlers entails or how it benefits Mississippi taxpayers, you’re not alone. The report also exposed that a staggering $11 million in taxpayer dollars has been funneled into diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives at colleges across the state—money that could have been used to reduce tuition costs or improve academic programs.

White’s investigation also uncovered numerous state-issued cell phones sitting unused, expensive office space standing vacant, and millions spent on healthcare for illegal immigrants. His separate “Project Momentum” report specifically addresses the financial burden placed on Mississippi’s healthcare, education, and criminal justice systems due to illegal immigration—a burden that federal mandates force states to bear regardless of their financial situations.

Mississippi’s “Musk” Takes on Government Inefficiency

In a nod to Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at the federal level, White has humorously dubbed his office “MOGE”—the Mississippi Office of Government Efficiency. “We’ve jokingly started calling ourselves MOGE, the Mississippi Office of Government Efficiency, like Elon Musk’s DOGE. We approach our work with the same attention to every penny as DOGE, and I’m happy to be Mississippi’s Musk,” White remarked.

“He explained: “We’ve been working on this project really for the last couple of years. And what’s encouraging right now is that President Trump and Elon Musk are doing DOGE, which has raised public awareness about the amount of fraud, waste and abuse in government. So people are starting to look closely at what we’ve uncovered. In our time in the state auditor’s office, my team and I have uncovered about $400 million worth of waste.”” – Shad White

While the State Auditor’s office doesn’t have the authority to directly cut the wasteful spending they identify—that power lies with state lawmakers—White’s work is crucial in bringing these issues to light. State Senator Chad McMahan has voiced support for trimming the budget to protect taxpayer money, suggesting that White’s findings could lead to meaningful action. White, who is considering a gubernatorial run in 2027, clearly understands that fiscal responsibility resonates with Mississippi voters tired of seeing their hard-earned money wasted.

A Call for Nationwide Government Efficiency

White’s message extends beyond Mississippi’s borders. “If you think the federal government is inefficient, I promise you, your state governments around the country are likely even less efficient,” he warned. This sobering assessment should concern taxpayers in every state. White is advocating for all states to initiate DOGE-like programs to root out waste and inefficiency, with Oklahoma’s auditor reportedly already working on a similar project.

“White commented: “So, if you think the federal government is inefficient, I promise you, your state governments around the country are likely even less efficient.”” – Shad White

The painful reality is that government waste isn’t a Mississippi problem—it’s an American problem. While taxpayers struggle with inflation and economic uncertainty, our government at all levels continues to throw money at ridiculous programs that serve ideological purposes rather than addressing citizens’ actual needs. White’s initiative represents the kind of no-nonsense, common-sense approach to government that voters across the country are desperately seeking. If every state had their own version of Mississippi’s Musk, perhaps we could finally get serious about reining in the wasteful spending that burdens American taxpayers.
